Crickets are more than just another delicacy, they are also environmentally sustainable. They are much easier to rear than the traditional livestock, grains and vegetables.

These tiny, yet complex, creatures are low maintenance. The farming and harvesting of crickets requires less in terms transportation and water in comparison to its competitors. One hundred pounds of feed produces an estimated ten pounds of beef. Similar amounts of ration produces approximately four times as much cricket meat.

They pose less threat to the environment as they release minimal amounts of greenhouse gases. Generally, pesticides are used to repel crickets, but with them becoming the main focal point of meat production such measures would be rendered obsolete.

Whilst crickets are an interesting source of protein and are economically convenient, it is wise to not seek out your average backyard “friend”. Those insects are likely flushed with pesticides which can only be harmful to your digestive tract and in the grand scheme of things, your cardio-vascular system.

Interested individuals are often advised to purchase these little critters from pet shops and bait stores. Special orders can also be made via the internet from insect suppliers. It is also advisable to cleanse each creature before devouring them. This can be done by feeding them on fresh grains for a couple of days. It will ensure the removal of unsavory substances they may have consumed.

Although it is quite common for many people to eat crickets raw. A beginner should test the waters by having them cooked for both safety and taste acquisition reasons. Legs and wings should always be removed before washing them and placing them in the freezer. This technique guarantees their lives will be snuffed out in approximately 15 minutes.
