11 Natural Remedies to Beat the Flu

The flu is a nasty virus that affects everyone across the globe occasionally.

The World Health Organization (WHO) states that millions of dollars are spent on drugs to help relieve flu symptoms each year. While many of us are guilty of spending on solutions that are pharmaceutical others find solace in natural remedies.

We have compiled a list of 11 natural remedies that are capable of effectively treating the flu.

1. Elderberry Syrup

Elderberries contain a high level of Vitamins A, B and C which help to boost the immune system.  These berries can be used to make syrup that is capable of relieving flu symptoms.

  • First, pour water into medium saucepan and add elderberries, ginger, cinnamon and cloves.
  • Bring to a boil and then cover and reduce to a simmer for about 45 minutes to an hour until the liquid has reduced by almost half. Allow it to cool before pouring through a strainer into a glass jar or bowl.
  • Finally, add one cup of honey and mixed thoroughly. Once you have completed the mixture, store it in the refrigerator and take daily. The standard dose is 1 tsp for children under 12 and 1 Tbsp for adults.

2. Honey

Honey is known to bolster the immune system. It contains antimicrobial and antibacterial properties that help relieve sore and itchy throat symptoms. A Tbsp of honey in your coffee, tea or hot water will leave you feeling energetic and healthy on a daily basis. (Do not administer honey to children under a year old)

3. Hot Peppers

Hot Peppers in particular Hot Chile Peppers contain capsaicin, the compound that makes them “lethal” and acts as a decongestant for stuffy nose. An alternative to these “tongue punishers” are mild bell peppers which are packed with vitamin C.

4. Yogurt

Eating yogurt which contains live bacteria is a good way to improve your health. The friendly bacteria found in this delectable stimulate the production of white blood cells that help to combat the flu virus. While experiencing symptoms of the flu, it is highly recommended to have one or two 6-ounce servings of yogurt per day. Choose low-fat, sugar-free yogurt with “live active cultures” seal.

5. Salt

Salt mixed in lukewarm water is a popular method for relieving several flu symptoms. A saltwater gargle containing about ¼ to ½ teaspoon of salt dissolved in 8oz of warm water can temporarily relieve a sore and itchy throat.

6. Mint

Mint contains menthol which is good for flu symptoms and sinuses. In order to harness the benefits of this herb, mince it, place it in a cup and pour boiling water over it then allow it to sit for five minutes before straining and drinking it.

7. Green Tea

Green Tea is widely known for its herbal properties that are capable of maintaining a healthy immune system. It is recommended that you drink 2-3 cups per day in order to not only prevent the flu but treat it when the symptoms are in full flight.

8. Ginger

The health benefits of ginger spans many generations. It is believed to have “mystical” healing abilities. Steep several slices of fresh ginger root in hot water and sip for an extra health boost or to soothe a cough or itchy throat.

9. Onions

Onions contain a high amount of the antioxidant quercetin which helps the body to fight free radicals and boosts the immune system. Onion soup is an effective way to treat the flu. Chop some onions into cubes. Bring water to a boil before adding onions and oregano. Let the mixture simmer for 15 minutes, or until the onions are translucent and soft. Drink the soup while it’s hot as this will allow the body’s temperature to increase and induce mild sweating.

10. Garlic

Garlic contains the immune boosting compound known as allicin which also relieves cold and flu symptoms. Chop or crush 1-2 gloves of fresh garlic and “steep” them in hot water, then drink it.

11. Black Tea

Black tea contains an array of nutrients and antioxidants that is effective for treating the flu. It is most effective when it is highly concentrated and sipped without milk or sugar.
